Title: FAITHFUL Birth of Saints (Book 2) Author: Michelle Hauck Mass Market Paperback: 480 pages Publisher: Harper Voyager Impulse (December 27, 2016) Amazon | Barnes & Noble | Goodreads About the book . . . Faithful: Birth of Saints Book Two Following Grudging–and with a mix of Terry Goodkind and Bernard Cornwall–religion, witchcraft, and chivalry war in Faithful, the exciting next chapter in Michelle Hauck’s Birth of Saints series! A world of Fear and death…and those trying to save it. Colina Hermosa has burned to the ground. The Northern invaders continue their assault on the ciudades-estados. Terror has taken hold, and those that should be allies betray each other in hopes of their own survival. As the realities of this devastating and unprovoked war settles in, what can they do to fight back? On a mission of hope, an unlikely group sets out to find a teacher for Claire, and a new weapon to use against the Northerners and their swelling army. What they find instead is an old woman. But she’s not a random crone—she’s Claire’s grandmother. She’s also a Woman of the Song, and her music is both strong and horrible. And while Claire has already seen the power of her own Song, she is scared of her inability to control it, having seen how her magic has brought evil to the world, killing without reason or remorse. To preserve a life of honor and light, Ramiro and Claire will need to convince the old woman to teach them a way so that the power of the Song can be used for good. Otherwise, they’ll just be destroyers themselves, no better than the Northerners and their false god, Dal. With the annihilation their enemy has planned, though, they may not have a choice. A tale of fear and tragedy, hope and redemption, Faithful is the harrowing second entry in the Birth of Saints trilogy.    About the Author . . . Holiday Post and Giveaway with Pitch Wars Mentor, Shari Schwarz

An tribute to that *one* book. For my oldest, it was Henry and Mudge when he was four and learning to read on his own. For my next two boys, it was Percy Jackson when they were in fifth grade (after years of struggling to read). For my youngest, it was a wordless book he could use as a teether when he was six months old. Before that, he cried every single time I tried to read him a book. (Now he LOVES books!) For the seventy-something year old man I met for the first time last night, it was my book. He told me it was the first time he’s ever been excited enough to read a book from cover to cover. Each of us has that one book that changed our lives. That one book that brought meaning into the dark or confusing parts of our experiences. For you, I hope you find that one book this year. Or maybe you’ve already found it. If so, I hope you find another… And another… Each *one* book that connects us to ourselves and others in deeper ways than we thought possible, brings hope and truth that grow and shape us. I’m thankful for the amazing books I’ve read this year and look forward to the next ones to come! I’m giving away a signed copy of my survival adventure, TREASURE AT LURE LAKE as well as a $10 Amazon Gift Card so that you can find your *one* book this year! (US/Canada only)   Blog | Twitter | Facebook | Goodreads Shari Schwarz lives in Ft. Collins, Colorado near the Rocky Mountains with her husband and their four boys. TREASURE AT LURE LAKE is her debut which reflects her love for a good survival adventure story. When she’s not reading or writing, Shari can be found freelance editing, weight-lifting, gardening or watching her boys play football, basketball, speed stacking, or wrestling. She frequently dreams of exploring Oregon Coast beaches or plotting out her next children’s book.   In TREASURE AT LURE LAKE twelve-year-old Bryce’s best-laid plans for a backpacking trip with his grandpa seem about to fall through all because his big brother, Jack, is threatening to boycott the trip. Then, while sulking in his grandpa’s barn, Bryce stumbles upon a treasure map. He doesn’t mean to steal it or unearth a painful family secret that will explain the root of the brothers’ conflict as they embark on an exciting and dangerous adventure. Ages 8-12 “…this book is jam-packed with adventure with lots of appeal for reluctant readers.” -Jenn Bishop, author of The Distance to Home “…both [brothers] must make some...

SECRETS OF SOUTHERN GIRLS by Haley Harrigan Published by Sourcebooks Coming Summer 2017 Description: In this powerful, affecting debut, a young woman uncovers devastating secrets about the friend she thinks she killed.  Ten years ago, Julie Portland accidentally killed her best friend, Reba. What’s worse is she got away with it. Consumed by guilt, she left the small town of Lawrence Mill, Mississippi, and swore nothing would ever drag her back. Now, raising her daughter and struggling to make ends meet in Manhattan, Julie still can’t forget the ghost of a girl with golden hair and a dangerous secret. When August, Reba’s first love, begs Julie to come home to find the diary that Reba kept all those years ago, Julie’s past comes creeping back to haunt her. That diary could expose the shameful memories Julie has been running from, but it could also unearth the hidden truths that Reba left buried…and reveal that Julie isn’t the only one who feels responsible for Reba’s death. A progressive Southern belle with a deep affinity for words and an unapologetic potty mouth, Haley lives in Athens, Georgia with her teacher husband and their unreasonably adorable Yorkie. She graduated from the University of Georgia with degrees in Creative Writing and PR. In addition to writing books, she has also opened a small business, baked cupcakes, and managed real estate for a living. When she’s not reading or writing, you can probably find Haley searching for fanfiction she hasn’t read yet, obsessing over all things Joss Whedon, watching college football, brunching, internet shopping, or bingeing on HGTV. She believes most problems can be solved with a notebook, a pen, and the right glass of wine. Website |...

Holiday Post and Giveaway with Pitch Wars Mentor, Samantha Joyce

2016 has been a rollercoaster of a year, but I’m going to take some time to focus on the ups instead of the downs. My debut novel, FLIRTING WITH FAME, came out in February. My second book (the stand-alone companion novel, DEALING IN DECEPTION) was released in November. I never thought I’d see a year where I would release one book, much less two. For so long, this crazy dream of being a published author seemed like an impossible achievement. But thanks to contests like Pitch Wars and the amazing writers I’ve met through it, I got to live my dream twice this year.   I loved so much of the process – seeing my cover for the first time, getting my first pass pages, finding my book on Amazon…but my absolute favorite part of the entire thing was the people I met throughout. I was lucky enough to land my dream agent. I had an editor who loved my book as much as I did. Those would have been enough. But then I learned about the amazingly supportive writing community. Other writers actually want to support you and help you out when they can. I come from a theater background, where competition is both fierce and necessary. Not many people cheer for each other when they all want the same part. But writers are a different breed all together. They want to see their peers succeed. They want to read each other’s books. They want to post ALL the good news. I feel so blessed to be a part of such a community. And I love supporting them right back. Please look through all the holiday posts and support both Brenda and all the authors here. <3 And finally, I got to connect with reviewers and readers. I don’t think there is anything like that moment a reader reaches out to tell you that your book changed things for them. When someone says, “Thank you for writing this.” all the years of sweat and hard work and tears feel validated. Those moments, in particular, are what I’ll carry with me into 2016 as I throw myself into new projects. I used to wonder if it was worth working so hard for this impossible dream, but now that I’ve caught a small glimpse of the other side, I know: IT IS. Happy Holidays, everyone! Here’s to a very good 2017! About DEALING IN DECEPTION: As an actress-for-hire, Veronica Wilde has made a living out of pretending to be other people. It’s the one thing at which she’s always excelled: taking on someone else’s personality and running with it. So...

A 2015 Pitch Wars Success Interview with M.K. England and her mentor, Sarah Glenn Marsh

We hope you love these success stories as much as we do. After all the writing and revising, the critiquing and the crying, this is the time to celebrate all the hard earned successes for our Pitch Wars mentees and their mentors. Today, we celebrate with M.K. England and her mentor, Sarah Glenn Marsh! Sometimes it takes more than a few weeks or even a few months, but M.K. and Sarah didn’t give up. After Pitch Wars 2015, M.K. signed with Barbara Poelle of the Irene Goodman Literary Agency, who helped get M.K. a book deal with Abby Ranger at HarperCollins Children’s. Please join me in celebrating with M.K. and Sarah! M.K., what made you decide to send a Pitch Wars application to Sarah? From her list of interests, I knew she was into the same kind of feel that I am. She specifically mentioned Firefly, which is a big comp title for THE DISASTERS, and also loved Avatar: TLA and Korra, Star Wars, and much more. She was also actively supportive of LGBTQ+ content. We’re also both board game nerds and love attending nerdy conventions, which were fun bits to have in common. Sarah, what about M.K.’s application made you choose her? I knew M.K.’s book was the one for me pretty much right when it hit my inbox; I had a serious flood of subs for Pitch Wars in 2015, yet M.K.’s sub was the only one I absolutely could NOT put down. I remember being in a bad mood/having a rough day, yet her ms made me laugh out loud multiple times! Her MC pretty much grabbed me by the hand and refused to let go until I’d followed him through his story, and the mix of action, humor/wit, and diversity that felt so true to our world won me over in an instant. There’s nothing sweeter or more appealing to me than sci-fi done well. I also knew from M.K.’s application, and from emailing with her, that she was going to be a serious, dedicated worker, and I wasn’t disappointed! I also learned through emailing with her that we shared oh-so-many favorite books and fandoms–which, while of course not a factor for choosing a mentee, was the icing on the cake as I knew it meant we could become good friends in addition to the mentor relationship! M.K., tell us about the revision period for Pitch Wars? Stressful, but fun! I was still very young as a writer and had only written one [very bad] book before this one, so I was still learning how to revise. Sarah had me make a revision outline and...

A 2015 Pitch Wars Success with M.C. Vaughan and her mentor, Lynnette Labelle

We hope you love these success stories as much as we do. After all the writing and revising, the critiquing and the struggles, this is the time to celebrate all the hard earned successes for our Pitch Wars mentees and their mentors. Today, we celebrate with M.C. Vaughan and her mentor, Lynnette Labelle! Sometimes it takes more than a few weeks or even a few months, but M.C. and Lynnette didn’t give up. After Pitch Wars 2015, M.C. signed with Barbara Collins Rosenberg of The Rosenberg Group. Please join me in celebrating with M.C. and Lynnette! M.C., what was it about Lynnette that made you choose to send her a Pitch Wars application? Choosing a mentor was not unlike choosing agents to query. Research, research, research. I read through each mentor’s bio, looking for those who were grabby hands about contemporary romance laced with humor. And lo, there were many! I dug in a little further to get a sense of whom might be a good personality fit—professional, smart, witty, and knowledgeable about both writing craft and bidness. When I saw Lynnette Labelle’s bio, she struck me as all of these things times eleven. Plus, she edits a lot of different genres/subgenres, so I was confident she’d tell me if I was straying too far outside the lines of my chosen genre. Lynnette, what was it about M.C.’s THE RELUCTANT PRINCESS that hooked you? The voice! M.C.’s voice, as you can see in her answers here, is amazeballs. I really liked the premise too, but without that voice, it wouldn’t have been the same. Before I went through any of the entries I received, I had an open mind. I’d posted what I wanted to see in my inbox, and as long as the author didn’t stray from that list, I was excited to see their pitch. But, once I came upon M.C.’s entry, all others competed directly with hers. This is where it got hard, because there were some fantastic entries in my pile. But, unlike an agent, I could only pick one. So, for me, it wasn’t about saying no to other writers, even though that’s what I had to do, it was about saying yes to this particular one. Once I decided this was the manuscript I had to have, I let the other mentors on her sub list know my intention was to fight to the death for this story. I MAY have licked the entry to prove my point. I mean, nobody would want it now, right? Because a couple of the mentors hadn’t chosen their mentee yet, there was a risk they could take M.C....

Holiday Post with Pitch Wars Mentor, Laura Heffernan

As I finish the year out less than three months before my publication date, it feels like 2016 has been full of special moments for me: getting an offer to publish the REALITY STAR series, seeing my cover for the first time, reading my first cover copy, telling all my friends and family I’d written a book, spotting my book on Amazon, having a friend find it on Goodreads. All of those stops on the road to publication are incredibly exciting, especially for a debut author. But what I really want to talk, the brightest spot in the year for me, is the help and support I’ve received from fellow authors. A few months ago, one of my friends started the 17Scribes, a group for debut authors with adult novels coming out in 2017. The people in that group are excellent at lifting each other up and sharing their knowledge and experience. Many PitchWars mentors are ahead of me on this journey, and everyone I’ve talked to has been happy to talk, whether it’s giving me tips on promotion and marketing or just being there to listen to how confusing and frustrating everything can be. When I celebrated each and every success, these people celebrated with me (even the ones who’ve done it half a dozen times). When I cried over things in the world that scared me, they cried with me. Many time I’ve thought I wouldn’t make it to publication without my friends. I appreciate the help and support I’m getting from these authors, and I can’t wait to be in a position to pay it forward some day. In the new year, I have plenty of hopes as a writer: I hope I continue to learn and grow as a writer. I hope my books find readers, and I hope you enjoy Jen and Justin’s journey as much as I enjoyed writing it. But on a more personal level, I hope we can all find light in the darkness. I hope those of us who are able take steps to stand up against hate and tyranny. I hope that, at the end of 2017, we are able to look around and see that our words and actions made the world a better place. I hope we can all lift up those who need it the most.     Twitter | Website Laura Heffernan is living proof that watching too much TV can pay off. When not watching total strangers participate in arranged marriages, drag racing queens, or cooking competitions, Laura enjoys travel, baking, board games, helping with writing contests, and seeking new experiences. She lives in the northeast with...
