A Pitch Wars Success Story with Becky Dean, and her mentor, Marty Mayberry!

The best part of the contests for us around here is when we hear about successes. Today we celebrate Becky Dean and her Pitch Wars mentor Marty Mayberry! Becky recently signed signed with literary agent Christine Witthohn of Book Cents Literary. We couldn’t be more thrilled for her. So without further ado, please join Becky and Marty as they recap their Pitch Wars success story. Becky, how did your Pitch Wars application end up with Marty? Did you send it to her or was it passed on to her by another mentor? What was your response when you found out Marty would mentor you? To my great embarrassment, I didn’t submit to her! Another kind, helpful mentor passed it on. There were so many great choices for mentors, I had trouble narrowing down my selections. Her voice is fun, and her writing is beautiful. I was really blown away by CHASING CHAUCER. I also looked for a manuscript I thought I could help. While Becky’s MS didn’t actually need lots of work, I got excited when I could see places I could help enhance. Becky, tell us about the revision period for Pitch Wars? I know it was stressful and intense for a lot of people, but I actually had a lot of fun. Marty helped me see areas for improvement in my book, and then helped me brainstorm ways to address them in a way that felt right to me and natural to the story I wanted to tell. It was a busy two months, but not overwhelming. And I found it exciting, because all the changes I made improved my book so when we were finished, I loved it even more. Marty, tell us about your experience with mentoring Becky. Becky was a pleasure to work with! I felt like we were a team working through her MS to make even better. Becky, after Pitch Wars you signed with Christine Witthohn of Book Cents Literary, tell us about “The Call.” Can you tell us the details about the offer: How long were you on submission? What did you do to distract yourself? How did Christine contact you? How did you respond? How did you celebrate? Anything! We...
