Pitch Wars Success Story with May B. Bridges and her mentor, Jami Nord!

I’m a little new to the world of pitch contests and have never even entered Pitch Wars, but I’ve seen the other side of it. Book deals, agent calls, the support, the camaraderie, being picked up when you think there’s no way to stand anymore. This is the best part, the most redeeming part of this community. Today we celebrate May B. Bridges and her Pitch Wars mentor Jami Nord! May recently signed with agent Kim Lionetti of Book Ends Literary. May, what made you decide to send a Pitch Wars application to Jami? She has amazing editorial experience, wanted romance, and didn’t seem like the type to shy away from something dark and gritty.  Jami, what about May’s application made you choose her? I was deliberately looking for something I thought would have a strong appeal to a range of agents. I’d done wonderful SF/F projects previously, and KT and I co-mentored a great Urban Fantasy, but those are harder sells. I was interning for a very romance-focused agent at the time, and so I requested about 6 manuscripts from my slush that were all either romances or had significant romance/thriller elements.  I kept jumping from MS to MS, but hers drew me back strongest. I narrowed it to a top 3, and the other 2 were wanted by other mentors as well. We sorted that out, and it made my choice easy! May, tell us about the revision period for Pitch Wars? I was lucky that I didn’t have a ton to do. Jami has a great mind for this business and before we stated revisions, we looked at where my book would fit best in the market and what publishers might have a place for it. With that in mind, we did revisions that moved the manuscript closer to those target audiences. Jami, tell us about your experience with mentoring May. She was really wonderful, both easy to work with and cheerful even when I was raking the MS over the coals. It straddled between romance subcategories, and there were places where the tension needed adjusted, things like that, but it was really already a pretty clean MS. We actually finished early, even with doing a line level pass on it to nitpick things like sensory details and flow. (She also sent me the most adorable notebook, with charms that fit her story after. Totally MADE my day!)   May, after Pitch Wars you signed with Kim Lionetti of BookEnds, tell us about “The Call.” Can you tell us the details about the offer: How long were you on submission? What did you do to distract yourself? How...

EDGE OF CHAOS by Molly Lee . . . Release Day and Giveaway!

Release Date: March 30, 2016 Photo & Cover Design: Regina Wamba / MaeIDesign and Photography Models: Ripp B. (Dash) & Mackenzy T. (Blake) About the book . . . Blake Caster has been in an emotionally abusive relationship with Justin for so long, she can’t tell what is normal anymore, and so she clings to the one thing that is solidly hers—her passion for extreme weather. Three years into her Meteorology degree, Blake meets professional storm chaser, Dash Lexington, who is as gorgeous as he is daring. Instantly recognizing her passion and skills in analyzing weather data, he makes a spot for her on his tight-knit storm chasing team. Dash and Blake form a fast friendship and it forces her to realize just how toxic her relationship with Justin is. She can’t deny the lightning-worthy chemistry she has with Dash or how her heart stalls every time he gets too close to a tornado. With each chase and the cherished moments with Dash, Blake discovers her own self-worth and gains the strength to end things with Justin for good. But he won’t go easily. As Blake tries to sever ties with one man, she fears she’ll lose the other to his dangerous obsession—and she doesn’t know if she’ll be enough to save him from the impending storm that could end them all. Brenda’s Review … I was lucky enough to get to read an ARC of EDGE OF CHAOS. This story was such a great read. I saw a lot of myself in Blake. I’d experienced a similar abusive relationship and Lee really captured the emotions perfectly. As a reader you’ll want to shake Blake and tell her to leave her abusive boyfriend, Justin, already, but then you learn how deep their relationship is, how long they’ve been together, and how connected they are. Justin was there for her during hard family times when she was a teen and she was there for him. They grew to need each other and slowly things took a turn for the worse. She has a sense of security with him and no matter what he does, it’s hard for her to let go. We get to see her evolve from being timid to taking charge. The storm chasing scenes blew me away (pun intended)! They were wonderfully written and had me frantically reading through the pages. I loved how Lee weaved the storms into the story and how they reflected what was going on in Blake’s life and that she chases storms as an escape from the category 4 happening at home. And can I just say, DASH! Not only is he...

A Pitch Wars Success Story with Becky Dean, and her mentor, Marty Mayberry!

The best part of the contests for us around here is when we hear about successes. Today we celebrate Becky Dean and her Pitch Wars mentor Marty Mayberry! Becky recently signed signed with literary agent Christine Witthohn of Book Cents Literary. We couldn’t be more thrilled for her. So without further ado, please join Becky and Marty as they recap their Pitch Wars success story. Becky, how did your Pitch Wars application end up with Marty? Did you send it to her or was it passed on to her by another mentor? What was your response when you found out Marty would mentor you? To my great embarrassment, I didn’t submit to her! Another kind, helpful mentor passed it on. There were so many great choices for mentors, I had trouble narrowing down my selections. I had considered Marty because she said she liked books in exotic settings, but I convinced myself that England wasn’t exotic enough and she wouldn’t pick me! I was so happy to be wrong. There may or may not have been gleeful jumping around a hotel room when I saw my name next to hers. Marty, what about Becky’s application made you choose her? Because I absolutely loved her story. Her voice is fun, and her writing is beautiful. I was really blown away by CHASING CHAUCER. I also looked for a manuscript I thought I could help. While Becky’s MS didn’t actually need lots of work, I got excited when I could see places I could help enhance. Becky, tell us about the revision period for Pitch Wars? I know it was stressful and intense for a lot of people, but I actually had a lot of fun. Marty helped me see areas for improvement in my book, and then helped me brainstorm ways to address them in a way that felt right to me and natural to the story I wanted to tell. It was a busy two months, but not overwhelming. And I found it exciting, because all the changes I made improved my book so when we were finished, I loved it even more. Marty, tell us about your experience with mentoring Becky. Becky was a pleasure to work with! I felt like we were a team working through her MS to make even better. Becky, after Pitch Wars you signed with Christine Witthohn of Book Cents Literary, tell us about “The Call.” Can you tell us the details about the offer: How long were you on submission? What did you do to distract yourself? How did Christine contact you? How did you respond? How did you celebrate? Anything! We...

B17: ADULT THRILLER: CANARY HILL

Title: Canary Hill Age Category: Adult Genre: Thriller Word Count: 94,000 Pitch: Struggling veteran Raleigh Taylor makes a deal with Sheriff John Boone to help solve his family’s grizzly murder. In exchange, John offers Raleigh a chance to piece his life back together. Assuming they both survive. First 250 Word of Manuscript: It wasn’t even noon yet, and Sheriff John Boone stood in the middle of a trailer park with his Colt 1911 pistol leveled at a piss-drunk, stark-naked white supremacist. “Jesus H. Christ, Ricky,” he said, doing his best to keep his gun aimed at the skinny, swastika-tattooed son of a bitch, and his eyes aimed anywhere but. Perks of a small town: he knew just about everybody’s name, down to the lowest sacks of coal dirt in the county. Downside was, he knew he’d run into Ricky again before long, and John didn’t think he’d be able to look him in the eye after this. “Put the damn gun down and put on some clothes.” Ricky swayed a little on his bare feet, a mostly-empty mason jar in one hand and a hunting rifle in the other. A row of cans sat untouched on the fence; the fence and the tree behind it weren’t quite so lucky. All things considered, John wasn’t too worried about taking a bullet. Not as long as Ricky was aiming for him. “Get off my property.” Ricky’s tongue was as clumsy as the rest of him, tripping over itself every other syllable. “You’re trespassing.” “And you’re about two sheets too far to the wind to be handling that rifle, so how about you put it down and save me the trouble of hauling you back to the station.” He tipped his hat back with his free hand to block a little more of the glaring West Virginia...
