A Pitch Wars 2015 Success Interview with Kris Hui Lee, Lori Goldstein, and Chelsea Bobulski!

The best part of the contests for us around here is when we hear about successes. Today we celebrate Kris Hui Lee and her Pitch Wars mentors, Lori Goldstein and Chelsea Bobulski! Kris recently signed with Courtney Miller-Callihan of Sanford J. Greenburger Associates , and we couldn’t be more thrilled for her. So without further ado, please meet Kris, Lori, and Chelsea as they recap their epically awesome Pitch Wars success story. KRIS, what made you decide to send a Pitch Wars application to LORI & CHELSEA? I actually didn’t originally sub to Lori and Chelsea, and I honestly have no idea how it wound up in their hands. (How did it, by the way?) But either way, I’m so so so so glad they picked it up because they are THE BEST. Brenda’s note: Mentors passed manuscripts they loved but weren’t choosing on to mentors who they felt were a better fit during the selection round. LORI & CHELSEA, what about KRIS ’s application made you choose her? The first page won us over. It had everything we look for in a manuscript: good writing, humor, and an incredible voice. So much can be played with in revisions, but voice is the thing that is either there or not. With Kris, it was not just there, it hooked us instantly. KRIS, tell us about the revision period for Pitch Wars? It was insane. I pretty much rewrote the entire MS in one month—which was the most writing I’ve ever done in such a little time. I was writing before class, after class, between classes. Just whenever I had free time, I was writing. (And even when I didn’t have free time…) But it was so worth it. Chelsea and Lori gave me such great feedback, and I think after implementing a lot of what they suggested, my MS is infinitely better because of it. I’m excited to see how much it will change and grow in the coming revisions. LORI & CHELSEA, tell us about your experience with mentoring KRIS. How was mentoring your other team members?  This was our first time co-mentoring, and it was a great lesson in how this entire business is subjective. While we both loved the manuscript, we each had slightly different notes for Kris on revision. Instead of trying to 100% merge them, we presented her with it all. Hopefully it didn’t overwhelm her! We hoped it had the effect of showing Kris that she is still the writer and the one in charge of her story. Feedback and critiques are important, but ultimately there is a subjective nature to all of this...

A Pitch Wars 2015 Success Interview with Mairi Kilaine and Kristin B. Wright!

The best part of the contests for us around here is when we hear about successes. Today we celebrate Mairi Kilaine and her Pitch Wars mentor, Kristin B. Wright! Mairi recently signed with Courtney Miller-Callihan of Sanford J. Greenburger Associates, and we couldn’t be more thrilled for her. So without further ado, please meet Mairi and Kristin as they recap their epically awesome Pitch Wars success story. MAIRI, what made you decide to send a Pitch Wars application to KRISTIN? Kristin was an obvious choice from the start. I had it on good authority (Kristin said it on social media) that she had recently attended a convention and enjoyed it. The style of mentoring she was offering was exactly what I was looking for and I was confident she’d stand by me through the entire process and beyond. Also, I really wanted to sing karaoke with her. KRISTIN, what about MAIRI ’s application made you choose her? Her voice leaped off the page and I was already rooting for Molly, her main character, from the first page. Her concept, a socially awkward writer at Comic Con, was so great. I knew very very early I wanted to mentor Mairi and UNCONVENTIONAL and spent the rest of the reading period before the announcement worrying that some other mentor would try to take it from me. Also, she has a similar affinity for men in kilts. Not a small factor. MAIRI, tell us about the revision period for Pitch Wars? I love revisions! Kristin’s edit letter was incisive and insightful. She gave me the perfect blend of “GAAAHH I love this” and “This isn’t working.” When I went to construct my brand new ending, Kristin was right there with the guidance I needed. Her critique partners are very, very lucky to have her. KRISTIN, tell us about your experience with mentoring MAIRI. How was mentoring your other team members?  Mairi jumped right in on the work. She took the edit letter like a champ (if she gnashed her teeth or rent her garments when she got it, she hid it from me), asked a couple of clarifying questions and got to work. She had the first revision done early enough I had a chance to go over it a second time. She was terrific. Any editor would be lucky to have her. MAIRI, after Pitch Wars you signed with Courtney Miller-Callihan of Sanford J. Greenburger Associates. Tell us about “The Call.” Courtney and I clicked immediately. We have many intersecting fandoms (shout out to my Faniltons) and interests within publishing. Plus she hollered when I told her about my current work-in-progress. The...

Guest Post by Pitch Wars Alumni, E. Latimer … The Things I’ve Learned

The things I’ve learned about publishing over the last four years could never be condensed into one blog post. I’ve learned it’s a slow and painful process, until it isn’t. Until everything happens at once and it’s incredibly exciting and stressful all at the same time. There’s a lot of “hurry up and wait” in the business. I can definitely cover a little bit of what I learned in 2014 in this blog post though. I’ve been querying on and off for years, but last year was the first time I entered Pitch Wars. It was one of the most wonderful and painful experiences of my writing career thus far. Painful because realizing where you’re consistently going wrong in your writing (getting feedback) can hurt, but wonderful because I wouldn’t be where I am now without it. My Pitch Wars manuscript had a lot of interest, first from mentors, then from agents. In fact, I was ecstatic when it actually won the MG category for “most requests”. I was sure I was set. Bring on the offers! And then the rejections came trickling in. And then flooding in. The feedback was consistent. Didn’t connect to the character. Didn’t connect. Didn’t connect. After having a mini breakdown (okay a major one, there was a lot of chocolate involved) I sat down and compiled all the feedback. I highlighted things, I took notes. I cobbled together a list of problems to fix. And I wrote something new. I discovered something pretty cool when I was finally ready to start querying. A lot of the agents recognized my name from Pitch Wars. A few of them told me they requested because they remembered the Pitch Wars manuscript, and how much they loved my writing. Even though I hadn’t received an offer directly out of Pitch Wars 2014, nearly a year later it was opening doors for me. Surreal. After six months of querying, and a set of revisions or two, I received an offer. I was in shock, rereading the email, barely able to believe it. I think I probably fell out of bed, though the excitement makes it difficult to remember the little details. I wandered around in a daze for a few hours and then sent off my “offer of rep” to the other agents reading the full. The next day another offer came in. A few days later…another. I know it’s a cliché to pinch yourself when you think you’re dreaming, but I did. Repeatedly. When the deadline finally came, I had three offers and an R&R with intent to offer, and an extremely difficult decision to make. In...

Lou might be only twelve, but she’s never been one to take things sitting down. So when her Civil War-era house is about to be condemned, she’s determined to save it—either by getting it deemed a historic landmark or by finding the stash of gold rumored to be hidden nearby during the war. As Lou digs into the past, her eyes are opened when she finds that her ancestors ran the gamut of slave owners, renegades, thieves and abolitionists. Meanwhile, some incidents in her town show her that many Civil War era prejudices still survive and that the past can keep repeating itself if we let it. Digging into her past shows Lou that it’s never too late to fight injustice, and she starts to see the real value of understanding and exploring her roots. Instagram:...
