The submission window for the Spencer Hill Contemporary pitch event is now CLOSED!

The submission window for the Spencer Hill Contemporary pitch event is NOW CLOSED!   You may pitch to the editors until April 30 at 11:59PM EDT. Follow the fun and the editors’ tweet on the Twitter hashtag #pitchSHC Here’s all the details from Spencer Hill Contemporary editors … We are looking for contemporary, realistic YA fiction only. This means anything that takes place in our world and abides by the generally accepted laws of reality, time, and space. For example: a historical fiction love story between a cowboy and a governor’s daughter set in 1954 would absolutely qualify. However, a paranormal romance where an alien cowboy falls in love with the governor’s daughter…who happens to be a vampire from 1954, would not. For this contest we are looking for real stories with real characters that we can fall in love with and pretend, with very little suspension of belief that those characters could exist out there somewhere. Strong voice and unforgettable characters are important to us. How do you make your query stand out? Pinpoint the piece of the story that makes your query unique. Tell us who your character is, what your character, and what stands in the way. Spencer Hill Contemporary only takes agented submissions year-round, so this is a really unique opportunity where most of our editors are in one place looking at your query! Keep in mind that we are not agents; we are editors looking for authors who want their books to be considered for publication! We are accepting completed, polished YA manuscripts only. If you’ve submitted your cowboy story before and someone on staff has read/reviewed/passed previously at any time, then please do not resubmit. Before you enter, please take a moment to check out www.spencerhillcontemporary.com to check out most of our current and upcoming titles. Please only submit if you are truly interested in having your book considered by our imprint for publication! We look forward to seeing your queries! To submit your query for consideration, in the comments below leave the following information: Name: Your Name Title: Title of Manuscript Word Count: Manuscript Word Count Your query (200 words max!) I’ll announce the winners during our Pitch Slap Twitter Pitch event on May 5. Hope you’ll join us. Summary for HOW TO REPRIMAND YOUR ROCK STAR: In this fun and saucy romance novel, all-star college basketball player Thea dominates on the courts—and off—with a rock star who is determined to win her over. Thea is a star basketball player at UConn on track to be Rookie of the Year. That is, if she can stay focused on the game. Lately that hasn’t been going so well, as her knee has been bothering her. But that’s not the only thing on her mind… Ever since rock star Keaton Lowe surprised her in the girl’s locker room, Thea can’t stop thinking about him. On top of his status and enticing ways, he seems to know everything about her. But some of his actions cross the line, and Keaton needs to be punished. Will Thea keep her head in the game, or get distracted by her other favorite pastime—reprimanding her rock star? Excerpt: Set up: College basketball star Thea is surprised in her locker room after a shower. The tall, gorgeous man stared at me with a smirk. Some fucking punk, sitting under my name and number and pulling a cigarette out of his thick leather jacket. He looked bad, dangerous, and delicious and my body reacted to seeing him with a jolt of fear and euphoria. I skittered back and covered my nakedness, hoping he hadn’t seen me fully naked. I peeked around the corner to get another look at him. I couldn’t help myself. His blue eyes twinkled at me and he grinned. A lopsided, roguish grin that begged you to join him in sharing the mirth. But I wasn’t about to smile at this fool who was taking up residence in front of my locker. Especially while I was naked. He didn’t look like a student—a few...

LIBRARY JUMPERS … introducing the cast of characters.

LIBRARY JUMPERS … introducing the cast of characters.

Since I’m deep in revisions for THE SEVENTH HEIR (book two in the Library Jumpers trilogy), I thought I’d share the characters I’ve been living with for years now.  They’ve become a big part of my life and, at times, I forget they exist only in my mind and live only within the pages of my novel. Here’s a mini-synopsis for LIBRARY JUMPERS.   Sixteen-year-old Gia Kearns would rather spar with boys than kiss them. That is, until Arik, a leather-clad hottie in the Boston Athenaeum, busts her staring at him while she’s with her friends researching for their summer essays. When he suddenly disappears, Gia swipes the book he abandoned and unwittingly speaks the key that sucks her and her friends into a gateway book linking the world’s libraries, where hidden behind bookcases lies a magical world and a rising evil that will alter both the Mystik and human realms, returning them to a time when frightening creatures openly roamed the earth and fed on humans. Jumping into some of the world’s most beautiful libraries would be a dream come true for Gia, if she weren’t struggling to fit into her new life as a Sentinel—magical knights charged with protecting humans from the creatures traveling across the gateway books—or busy resisting forbidden love. But as the threat from an exiled wizard seeking revenge rises, Gia must choose between her heart and her head, between Arik’s world and her own, before they’re both destroyed.   So without further ado, I give you the cast of LIBRARY JUMPERS…   Gianna “Gia” Kearns Age: 16 Sentinel Battle Globe: unknown Description: Athletic bookworm with a fear of traffic and an affection for Root Beer Lipsmackers. “Are you afraid of me? ’Cause you should be. I’m the one Agnost foretold.”   Arik Baine Age: 17 Sentinel Battle Globe: Red (Fire) Description: Leader, strong silent type, and fiercely loyal. “Friends don’t think of each other the way I think of you. As it is, I can’t sleep at night worrying about you being here. The danger you face.”   Bastien Renard Age: 18 Novice Wizard Description: High wizard’s son, the “rock star” of the Mystik world, and compassionate. “I’m falling for you, Gia, and with time, I’ll prove to you we belong together. Go ahead and have your fun with Arik, but it’s my arms you’ll end up in one day. I’ll wait for you.”   Nick D’Marco Age: 16 Gia’s Best Boy Friend Description: Sarcastic, careless, a goof, and protective of his friends. “No joke. She’s fiery.” … “Good thing I like spicy.”               Afton Wilson Age:...

Another Pitch Madness Match up … Tom Mulroy & Carrie Howland!

I’m so thrilled to announce a Pitch Madness success story. Tom Mulroy has signed with the amazing Carrie Howland with Donadio & Olson, Inc.! Tom Mulroy Twitter Blog Tom has agreed to let me torture interview him. Here’s how it went down… B: So let’s get this party started. What made you decide to enter Pitch Madness, and how did you feel during the contest? Tom: I’d been a first alternate during PitchWars, so PitchMadness was definitely on my radar. Even though I’d gotten a partial out of PitchWars that became a full, I knew it wasn’t a sure thing so I figured there was nothing to lose in trying another contest. I was on spring break while the finalists were being chosen and had time to follow the whole Twitter narrative, but I tried not to check it too obsessively to keep myself from thinking in circles. It was a great surprise when my name turned up on one of the blogs. I really didn’t think that after Pitch Wars lightning would strike a second time.  B: With that kind of luck, I’d be hitting the casino or something. And which blog were you on and what was the title of your entry? How many requests did you get? Tom: I was on Rebecca Weston’s blog. My manuscript FOLLOWING INFINITY rounded up one entire request, which I was happy to get. When the agent round started I kept seeing tweets like, “Woo-hoo! Our team has this many requests! And now this many! And can you believe it, now we have THIS many!” I’d see those updates and think, “Man, I hope at least one is for mine.” And that was exactly what happened. And it was the right one. B: As we always say in this business … it only takes one!! So you sent in your request to your agent. Was it a partial or a full? Tell us the details of the submission and wait time you had before Carrie Howland with Donadio & Olson, Inc. asked for the Call? Tom: She asked for a full, which I sent as soon as I could. Oddly enough I’d received another full request on that same day from querying, and I still had a full out from PitchWars. Going from one to three fulls in a matter of hours was head-spinning. I did all my research on everyone and mapped out how much time it seemed I should expect to wait, then pushed it out of my head. I first heard from Carrie two weeks later when she sent a quick message saying how much she was enjoying...

A Pitch Madness Match-up … Olivia Hinebaugh & Carrie Howland!

I’m so thrilled to announce a Pitch Madness success story. Olivia Hinebaugh has signed with the amazing Carrie Howland with Donadio & Olson, Inc.! Olivia Hinebaugh Website Twitter   Olivia has agreed to let me torture interview her. Here’s how it went down…   B says: So let’s get this party started. What made you decide to enter Pitch Madness, and how did you feel during the contest? Olivia: I finished my manuscript in February and wanted to try for Pitch Madness as well as Pitch Plus 1 (on Adventures in YA Publishing) to get some feedback and hopefully some agent eyes on my pitches before I started querying in full swing in April. (That was the plan anyway.) I always wanted to do Pitch Madness, but the timing had never worked out with my previous project. Because Pitch Plus 1 turned out so well for me (I won and got two full requests out of it) I began querying right around the Pitch Madness deadline. I wasn’t too too anxious to see if I would get picked because I knew I had put a lot of feelers out there. That didn’t stop me from obsessively checking the feed, but I enjoyed myself. Of course when I found out I was picked, I was so so happy! B says: And I’m so SO happy you did, too! Which blog were you on and what was the title of your entry? How many requests did you get? Olivia: I was on Team Ballsy on Becca’s blog. My entry was LEAVING PEACESYLVANIA. And, okay, Carrie’s was the only request. A couple of the agents participating had my full or at least a query already, so I tried not to sweat it. And I was thrilled to have that request, but…well…I was hoping for a few more. (Goes to show you that you only need one!) B says: Right? It’s not a crock … YOU ONLY NEED ONE! So you sent in your request to your agent. Was it a partial or a full? Tell us the details of the submission and wait time you had before Carrie Howland with Donadio & Olson, Inc. asked for the Call? Olivia: I sent the full almost immediately. Well, first I researched Carrie since I hadn’t got that far in my querying. And there weren’t that many interviews out there, but the one I read, she seemed totally great. So I happily sent my query letter and my full and sent out the last couple A list queries. One of those queries turned into a full request and an offer of representation in 24...
